Sleeping Pads
If we're sleeping on the ground, we're sleeping on a Thermarest.  The durable and economic Z-rest foam pad is great for dragging around camp, sitting next to the camp fire, or sleeping right on the ground beneath the stars.  Thermarest's Neo-Air is our air mattress of choice - talk about sleeping on a cloud in the middle of nowhere!  Once again, there's a number of options to choose from - stop in and we'll help you make the right choice.

Stoves, Cookwear, and Meals

Whether you're looking for a compact backpacking stove or a burly two-burner, Kristi Mountain Sports has the stove to get the job done.  Of course gourmet cooking in the woods calls for a pot, skillet, or both - we've got those and more.  And don't forget we have the best selection of freeze-dried meals in the San Luis Valley!

Stoves
Selecting the right stove for your particular needs can be challenging - Kristi Mountain Sports is here to help.  We've got an incredible selection of MSR, Jetboil, and Brunton backpacking stoves.  Don't forget fuel - we sell compressed iso-butane cannisters as well as MSR Superfuel for liquid fuel stoves.

If you're looking for a larger camp stove to cook the big meals at base camp, look to our selection of Primus stoves.  These two burner propane stoves are the tool of choice when cooking for mid-sized groups. Sorry, we do not sell the propane cannisters for these stoves.

Water Purification

Kristi Mountain Sports is the place to find the gear to satisfy all of your backcountry water purification needs.  Water sources in the mountains surrounding the San Luis Valley can contain bacteria and protozoa (Giardia and Cryptosporidia being the most common).  Protect yourself from backcountry illness by always filtering, chemically treating, or boiling water collected from streams or ponds.

Water Filters
We stock incredible backcountry water filters by MSR and Katadyn.  Filtration is among the most effective and efficient methods for making water safe to drink.  Water is immediately cleansed of particulates, bacteria, and protozoa (Note - chemical additives are only needed if Virus contaminants are of concern).  No need to waste prescious fuel and the product is crystal clear drinking water.

Chemical Treatment
Iodine and chlorine tablets have long been the purification method of choice for those looking to limit equipment weight.  Tablets eventually create safe drinking water, but only after a significant wait (15-30 minutes).  Dirt and particulates remain in the water, and the taste of the chemicals can only be eliminated with a secondary taste treatment tablet.  We reccomend keeping chemical tablets in your emergency kit, but use other purification methods when cleansing large quatities of water.

Boiling
Boiling water is an effective method of making water safe to drink.  When the water reaches its boiling point, it is safe to drink - no need to waste the fuel boiling for an extended period of time.  Find the gear on our Stoves and Cookwear page.

Ultra-violet Light
The newest technology for purifying water is using ultra-violet light.  We stock the SteriPENand the Camelbak All Clear bottle.  This purification method removes all bacteria, protozoa, and viruses, but is not effective in particulate laden water.  This is a great way to ensure you have safe drinking water in foreign countries!  Stop by and learn more.
